Apply to adopt
Our adoption application asks about your household, your experience, your other animals, and what your days actually look like.
Not because we are trying to catch you out, but because matching is the entire job. A dog placed into a home that cannot meet its needs does not stay there, and every failed placement costs the dog more than it costs anyone else.
Answer it honestly rather than impressively. “I work long hours and need a lower-energy dog” is a useful answer; it narrows the field to dogs who will thrive with you. There is no version of this where telling us what you think we want to hear ends well for anyone.
What happens after you submit
We read every application ourselves. Nothing is auto-approved and nothing is auto-rejected.
The next step is usually a conversation, then references, then whatever else the particular dog calls for. A high-drive or bite-history dog involves more steps than an easygoing one, and it should.
If we are not a fit for each other, we will tell you plainly and say why. If we are a fit but the timing is wrong, or the right dog for you is not here yet, we will say that too and keep you on file.

Transport out of California and Texas is a constant need, and it is one of the most useful things a person can do without taking a dog into their home.
Curious how much you already know?
We keep an optional Working-Dog Suitability Questionnaire. It is not required for anything unless we specifically ask for it, to see the extent of your knowledge for a particular dog. A low score does not necessarily disqualify you either. That depends on the dog’s needs and on what help we can provide for any gaps. Mostly it is there for people who want to find out how their instincts about working breeds hold up.
Ranger’s Last Resort is an up-and-coming nonprofit and our 501(c)(3) determination has not been issued yet. Applying now puts you in the queue and gets the vetting underway, which takes time regardless. It does not mean a placement is available today.
