We got the sprinklers out this month and added extra pools to the yard. They had a blast. Northern breeds in an Ohio summer need somewhere to dump heat, and a husky who has decided to lie down in a pool of water will not be talked out of it.

Over May and June we put most of our effort into the property rather than into anything visible from the outside. The fence got upgraded. Containment is the single largest ongoing cost of working with these breeds, and it is not optional.

We began organizing our documents this month to file for nonprofit status. It is not glamorous work. Articles of incorporation, bylaws, a conflict of interest policy, board paperwork, and a great deal of reading about what a small organization is and is not allowed to do before the IRS has said anything about it.

Dirk is a black German Shepherd, three years old, fully protection trained. He was adopted this month. He turned up with a good samaritan who had taken him in and needed help finding him somewhere to go. That is a common enough situation. What was not common was the dog.
October 2025
For a long time this was local work. Owner surrenders, referrals from a vet clinic down the road, a dog someone knew about who needed somewhere to go. All of it within driving distance, all of it word of mouth. That changed this month.

Mirko has a cart now. He is a Belgian Malinois, and he was hit by a car and left paralyzed in the hind end. That is the kind of note in a file that ends a dog’s chances almost everywhere.

Ranger died this morning. He was thirteen. He came in last night acting a little strange. I thought the fall rain had gotten into his joints, gave him his usual medication, and he laid down. He was gone by morning. A few days ago he saw all of his friends.
